Twisted Ux Tubes and How They Get That Way 1. Flux Tubes

چکیده
According to present theories, the Sun's magnetic eld rises through the convection zone in the form of slender strands known as ux tubes, traditionally studied using \thin ux tube" models. While these models have been remarkably successful they have only recently begun to account for tubes with twisted magnetic ux, in spite of observational evidence for such twist. In this work we review the recent developments pertaining to twisted magnetic ux tubes and compare quantitative predictions to observations. Hydrodynamic theory predicts a role for twist in preventing fragmentation. Excessive twist can also lead to magnetohydrodynamic instability aaecting the dynamics of the tube's axis. A thin tube model for a twisted tube suggests several possibilities for the origin of twist. The most successful of these is the-eeect whereby twist arises from deformation of the tube's axis by turbulence. Simulations show that the-eeect agrees with observations in magnitude as well as latitudinal dependence. Magnetic eld appears at the solar surface in the form of isolated domains comprising active regions (ARs). These have been understood as the manifestation of slender, pressure-connned strands of magnetic eld called ux tubes (Parker 1955a). Flux tubes rise buoyantly as arched-loops, originating at the base of the convection zone (CZ) where they are generated by dynamo action. Equations describing the dynamical evolution of a buoyant ux tube were proposed by Spruit 1981] and have been employed in modiied form Numerical solutions of such model equations have shown good quantitative agreement with sunspot data. This agreement includes the measured \tilt angle" of a

THE DYNAMICS OF MAGNETIC FLUX TUBES IN THE SOLAR CONVECTION ZONE A Study of Active Region Formation
1. Abstract We describe some of our recent work on the dynamics of ux tubes in the solar convection zone. We focus on two topics, the rst being the orientation (\tilt") of active regions, and how comparisons between observations of tilt and tilts computed from numerical simulations of ux tubes can be used to infer properties of magnetic elds deep in the solar interior. The second topic is an in...
متن کاملConfining flux tubes in a current algebra approach.
We describe flux tubes and their interactions in a low energy sigma model induced by SU(Nf ) → SO(Nf ) flavor symmetry breaking in SO(Nc) QCD. Unlike standard QCD, this model allows gauge confinement to manifest itself in the low energy theory, which has unscreened spinor color sources and global Z2 flux tubes. We construct the flux tubes and show how they mediate the confinement of spinor sour...
متن کاملNonlinear Evolution of Axisymmetric Twisted Flux Tubes in the Solar Tachocline
We numerically study the evolution of magnetic fields and fluid flows in a thin spherical shell. We take the initial field to be a latitudinally confined, predominantly toroidal flux tube. For purely toroidal, untwisted flux tubes, we recover previously known radial-shredding instabilities, and show further that in the nonlinear regime these instabilities can very effectively destroy the origin...

In this paper, experimentally derived correlations of heat transfer and pressure drop are used in a Pareto based Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) approach to find the best possible combinations of heat transfer and pressure drop of TiO2-water nanofluid flow in tubes fitted with multiple twisted tape inserts in different arrangement. In this study there are four independent design variables: t...
متن کاملThe Origin and Role of Twist in Active Regions
The implications of twist in active region magnetic elds is considered in this paper. The latitudinal distribution of twist that has been derived from recent vector magnetogram observations may be explained by the eeects of convective turbulence with a non-zero kinetic helicity acting on active region scale magnetic ux tubes as they rise through the convection zone. Highly twisted, kink unstabl...
